Tennis...

Tennis is played on a wider variety of surfaces than most sports.

The surfaces split into two categories for handling water. They are porous (permeable) and non-porous.

Porous Types

Of the porous or permeable tennis surfaces the most common are:

  • Water permeable cushioned acrylic surfaces These are acrylic surfaces installed with a prefabricated pad over open textured tarmacadam.
  • Sand-filled artificial grass Medium pile height, fairly dense artificial grass filled with spherical grained sand infill.
  • Sand-dressed artificial grass Short pile artificial grass with a lighter dressing of specialist sand infill.
  • Clay or Artificial Clay These usually comprise a "stabilising mat" with an infill designed to mimic the crushed brick of the original "real" clay tennis surface.

For porous surfaces a well structured and prepared permeable base layer with excellent drainage is essential. Line markings are permanent and the acrylic type will require repainting at regular intervals. All surfaces require good maintenance to preserve drainage and playing characteristics.

Non-porous or Impermeable Types

There is a large number of brands of non-porous or impermeable tennis surfaces but all are based on acrylic coatings:

  • Cushioned Acrylic These are acrylic surfaces installed with a cushioning layer over close textured, dense tarmacadam or power-floated concrete.
  • Non-cushioned Acrylic These are acrylic surfaces installed with no cushioning layer over close textured, dense tarmacadam or power-floated concrete.

For all these types a dense well prepared impermeable base layer is essential. Line markings are permanent and surfaces will require repainting at regular intervals. All surfaces require good maintenance to preserve drainage and playing characteristics.
